“The story of the Clocktower begins with Mr. James Noble, Sr. of Cornwall, England, who had moved his family of six sons and several daughters, from Reading, Pennsylvania to Georgia’s Rome. He purchased property along the banks of the Etowah River in downtown Rome and built an immense foundry and machine works. Here, he and his sons manufactured steam engines and other articles of iron and steel. When the South seceded from the Union, the Noble Foundry converted a large share of its production to cannon for the Confederacy. This activity became known to Federal forces which led to the occupation of Rome in 1864. Months later, General Sherman ordered the evacuation of Federal troops, the Noble Foundry destroyed, and most of the downtown area destroyed by fire.” – romega.us

Description

As a vital center for local historical research the Rome Area History Museum is appropriately located on Broad Street in the heart of Historic Downtown Rome, Georgia. The Museum was established in 1996 to promote an understanding of our shared past, to enrich our lives, and to inspire a stronger sense of community. The museum strives to achieve this goal through preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting collections portraying the history of Rome and the surrounding area. Thousands of visitors young and old have taken advantage of the programs and exhibits at the Rome Area History Museum. The permanent exhibits create a walk through time starting with the Native Americans and early settlers, through the Civil War, and then the development of Rome’s culture, life-ways, and industries. Original documents such as maps, blueprints, photos, personal letters, and business records provide primary sources that paint a picture of Rome’s history. The archives house photographs, books, and manuscripts pertaining to the Northwest Georgia region.

The Museum is closed on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day so that our staff can be with their families.

The Museum is open on Memorial Day to host the Downtown observances. We also stay open late on May 18th to celebrate International Museum Day. Admission is free on these two days.

The Museum Store is open whenever the Museum is open. There is no charge to enter the Museum Store. The Museum Archives are currently open by appointment.

Free Days:
